NATIONAL OFFICE
At 12:00 midnight, September 14, 1950, the gavel sounded once and
62 brothers of Pi Kappa Alpha who had promised "I shall return," rose
sharply to their feet to begin making plans for a semester that was to
offer more problems than Alpha Eta had ever faced since 1941.
In the next few days, a small but eager group of hard working
brothers made more constructive changes in the "Old Ivy Covered Hovel"
than the University of Florida campus in Gainesville had seen in a long
time. There was lawnmowing, scrub pruning, hedge clipping, painting in-
side and out, and many other general face-lifting activities that made
the northeast corner of 13th Street and University Avenue, at the focal
point of the campus, look like an enlarged ant hill.
During the course of the next week, every one in the Pike house
was amazed at the everlasting ingenuity displayed by Dale Everett, our
new I M C. Through his efforts the rush week scheduled by the local
Greeks was something to behold. When at last the dust had settled, the
brothers could sleep six hours a night and the weary eyes could at last
be closed without fear that a rival fraternity would take a prospective
pledge. Pi Kappa Alpha pledged 51 men, each of whom seemed by some brother
to possess the qualities of a student body president or a Phi Beta Kappa.
Alpha Eta elected a slate of officers for the fall semester which
were destined before they were through to reorganize completely the chapter
in such a way that every man was on at least one committee and felt that
he was such an integral part of the chapter that it couldn't get along
without him. This helped to promote interest among all parts of the or-
