The first meeting of the new year was called to order at
6:30 P.M. on the night of January 6. The final exams of the pre-
vious quarter had removed three pledges from our group but not
A single active. Therefore we were off again on the right foot
with every man pulling for Zeta. The first quarter results of
brought to light A 2.16 average which placed us third among the
twenty frats of the Hill in scholarship. We repeated this the
next quarter, landing again Among the first three. This excell-
ent work, when checked upon, showed that our standing was A re-
sult of the conscientiousness of each individual rather than
Herculean efforts by A few. This was the case in spite of the
fact that five of the brothers were 3. men. For this same quar-
ter, the pledge group ra niked sixth on the campus, only three
failing to make the necessary initiation average of 1.5. Every-
thing indicates that these three will come through the last of
this term and will be initiated immediately after this school
year is over. Just at present we have thirty-eight active men,
twelve of whom will pass on over the Hill in June. We are enter-
taining high hopes of having at least twenty-five actives back
next Fall to carry on. If this happens, we should have the larg-
est chapter on the campus and certainly one of the big leaders.
The chapter is just now emerging from the hollow that it fell
into from the erest of 1928-1929; and from all indications Zeta
will have A banner year in 1931-1932.
In maintaining the high scholastic average, Zeta has not
neglected the social and extra-ourricular activities. The
chapter has continued to entertain the coeds and town girls
with the bi-monthly dinner dances at the chapter house. All of
these with the exception of one or two were thoroughly enjoy-
able affairs, which quite naturally aid us in keeping the favor
of the sororities of the campus. All of which means something
to us in the general election each Spring for campus leaders.
The only other outstanding social affairs were the Easter dinner,
on which occasion we were honored by the presence of A dozen
sorority girls, and the Founder's Day Banquet which was held
at the Andrew Johnson Hotel on March,2. Dean F.M. Massey, as A
very capable toast master turned the banquet into A pleasant
get-together that brought out 4 fine spirit of fraternalism
among those present. Our last gesture of the year will be A
big dance in Jefferson Hall on the night of May 2, the day af-
ter the Ca rnicus.
In general campus activities the chapter stands in the
most favorable position that it has occupied in the past three
years. Spring elections are just over, and we find that half
of our candida tes have been elected. J. Pike Powers 111 is
the new alumms member of the publication council, Allison
Bellenger is head cheer leader and Education representative
to the All Student's Club council, Maurice Corbitt is one of
the two student representatives on the athletic council. These
are but A few of the activities, for we have the managers next
year in all the major sports with the exception of basketball,
and at least two men in every sport, including this year's
captain in all except football.
