ZETA CHAPTER HISTORY FOR THE YEAR BEGINNING SEPTEMBER
22, 1937.
Last Fall, twenty-two actives returned to Zeta, ten less than had
left for vacation in the Spring of 137, to a house that was looking bett-
er than ever with its new wall-paper, painting, and new articles of furni-
ture1 The improvements on the house were made just before school started
by a committee headed by Brother Fred Bowman of Knoxville. All but one
of the officers returned with Herlong Adams, a senior from Jacksonville,
Fla., as S. M. C.
Knowing that our ranks were weakened by graduation and by a too
small pledge group from the year before, we pledged, perhaps too hastily,
22 freshmen during rush week. We hoped to make loyal Pikes out of as many
of this group as possible, but something was wrong, for at the end of
the first quarter, we were forced to break the pledges of twelve of this
number because they had not made the 1.2 average required by the Univer-
sity of a fraternity pledge. Only one of this group was repledged since.
A few others dropped out for various reasons, so that our pledge group
was unusually small, numbering only nine. We were glad, however, that
this group was of admirable quality to the man. And we believe that every
one of them will be mainstays of the chapter in the future.
In spite of our loss of pledges because of grades, we still be-
lieve that our pledge training was adequate. During the first quarter,
Baker Symes was goat-master, and he was so popular with the pledges that
they voluntarily awarded him with a goat master's "paddle" key when his
term was over. Since Brother Symes was a cooperative engineer and did
not return the second quarter, Brother Curry was appointed to take his
place and he picloted the pledges until the time of initiation doing a
very good job. In the pledge meetings, the goats were instructed in the
