HISTORY OF Alpha Eta
CHAPTER FOR YEAR Sept.1946 TO June 1947
If the year 1945-46 was known as "the year the boys
came back" -- surely then the year 1946-47 could be called "the
year that even MORE boys came back"
for
that
was
just
the
case. Amid the hustle and bustle of block-long lines of regis-
tering students, the banging of hammers rushing to completion
many temporary dormitories and classrooms, and the determination
of the returning veteran student to make good and catch up on
a lot of lost time away from school
the Fall Semester
officially began.
Alpha Eta had her problems too; what with an ever-
increasing Chapter and the problems of returning to "normalcy"--
to borrow a word CO œined by President Harding. However, with
cooperation on the part of all Brothers and Pledges, Alpha Eta
started her scholastic year.
First on the agenda came Rush Week -- and after
various Rush parties and "smokers" at the Chapter House and
also the Hotel Thomas in Gainesville, forty seven men accepted
the pledge pin. The new pledges were introduced to fraternity
social life when a general "get-together" sponsored by the
Jacksonville Alumni Association was held at the Hotel Mayflower
in Jacksonville following the Florida-Mississippi game.
Chapter business got under full swing with the
election of the following officers to serve for the Fall
Semester:
S.
M. C. -- B. W. Allen, Clearwater, Florida
I. M. C. -- Neal G. Powell, Sanford, Florida
Th. C.
-- Joe Hampton, Miami, Florida
S. C.
-- William E. Boyd, Sarasota, Florida
M. S.
-- Bill Whiddon, Ocala, Florida
Historian -- John Palmer, Wauchula, Florida
Homecoming found Pi Kappa Alpha welcoming the largest
crowd of guests and alumni in its entire history. The House
decorations were rated second place of all houses around the
campus; and the night before the Homecoming game, at the annual
Gator Growl, it was announced that Pi Kappa Alpha had won the
Little Brown Jug quartet singing contest. The members of this
winning quartet were Brothers Bill whiddon, Harold Wheeler; and
Pledges Albert Jacobi and Raymond Beck.
The Intramural sports year 1946-47 was an eventful
one for Pi Kappa Alpha. Although the chapter found itself in
a cycle of bad luck in the field of basketball, a good showing
was made. The fraternity, however, went undefeated to the
semi-finals in Ping Pong and Volley Ball. In boxing, Brother
Dennis Henry was a semi-finalist in the 145-55 pound class;
Brother Bill Hess was a finalist in the 125-35 pound class: and
