UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA
gainesville
At the close of school in 1934, the following
officers were elected to guide the activities of
Alpha-Eta during the first semester of the current
year: Billy Akerman, SMC; Risdon Boykin, IMC; and
Jack Fosgate, Housemanager. Burwell Howard, Thc.,
was held over from the previous semester. Jack Kline
was appointed Steward; John Courier, so; Norman
Browne, MS; and Gregory McDonald, MC.
Under the leadership of these men an extensive
summer rushing campaign was inaugerated. This includ-
ed, besides smaller gatherings in practically every
town in the state, a smoker in Jacksonville, a ban-
quet in Winter Haven, a dance at Clearwater Beach,
and was climaxed with the annual state-wide house-
party held at Wilbur-by-the-Sea, a resort hotel at
Daytona Beach. There about 40 brothers, 25 rushees,
and their dates gathered from all over the state,
and spent a most enjoyable week-end on the famous
beach.
The results of these extensive efforts were
more than gratifying. The largest freshman class in
the history of the university enrolled this year,
and Alpha-Eta, with Brother Boykin as rushing chair-
man, exerted itself to take advantage of the unusual
amount of fraternity material. We pledged 28 : Dick
Biel, St. Petersburg; Gordon Belcher, Largo; Leonard
Caldwell, Mulberry; William Cathrae, Eustis; Billy
Cauley, Miami; Ralph Daffin, Quincy; Richard Deas,
Sanford; Don Dyrenforth, Jacksonville; Joe Dowdell,
Miami; Milton Gallager, Plant City; Billy Goza, Clear-
water; Bill Hannum, Eustis; Jack Hutchison, Winter
Haven; Paul Henderson, Lakeland; Weller Hunt, Clear-
water; Frank Murphy, Orlando; Sam Murrow, Talla-
hassee; Jim Mulholland, Eustis; Braxton Perkins,
Sanford; Jack Ransom, Pittsburg, Pa.; Hatton Rogers,
Palmetto; Nat Turnbull, Gainesville; Claude Spark-
man, Waldo; Harry Towson, Gainesville; Roscoe
Skipper, Lakeland; Baxter Waldrop, Palmetto; Jack
Spruill, Gainesville, and Ross Singletary, Miami.
These newly pledged men chose as their officers:
Nat Turnbull, president; Frank Murphy, vice-president;
