HISTORY OF Gamma Theta
CHAPTER FOR YEAR Sept. 1946
TO May
1947
Gamma Theta has made 1946-47 a record year on the Miss. State College Campus.
This has been a year of re-organization, re-grouping and progress. Larger than
we have ever been before in the history of the chapter, our fraternity has taken
the lead in every activity introduced into campus life.
At the end of the Spring semester, Gamma Theta has 76 members and 27 pledges.
This outnumbers any other social fraternity on the campus. We have held high
our record of scholarship and have contributed largely to the social and
religious activities.
Pledges who were initiated during the year were: James Harry Smith, Tupelo;
Medie T.Still, Meridian; John A. Edwards, "eland; Jack McGee, Greenville;
George P. "endrick, Jackson; Charles Aldridge, Winona; John R. Booth, Pexington;
Sidney Brevard, Drew; William V. Buchannan, Indianola; James Chisholm, Bupelo;
James E. Conn, Crystal Springs; Julian Crawford, Holly Bluff; Frank Marion
Branch, Winona; George H. Keith, Carthage; Charles Mars, Philadelphia; High
F. Miller, Yazoo City; William M. Pitts, Indianola; John W. Roach, Vicksburg;
Paul Schmitz, Amory; Thomas Walker, Jackson; John Earl Whitaker, Amory; Albert
Reid Smith, Newton; Julian W. Rives, Indianola; Edgar D. Johnson, Long Beach;
Cligton Jamar Stevenson, Flora; Joseph B. Whitesidek Tupelo; William L. Richmond,
Summit; Billy Shelton, Vaiden; Thomas H. Simmons, "eridian; Charles H.
Weissinger, Cary; Fee Robinson, Hickory; Frank H. King, Pocahontas; 'ames W.
Dixon, Vaughn; Miles D. McCaleb, Cleveland; Edward B. McDaniel, Roms; Walter
W. Chapman, Indianola, "oseph Bennett, Vaiden.
Brother "ack Roach was awarded a beautiful gold ring after having been
selected the most outstanding pledge of the chapter for the year. From the
pledges having the highest scholastic record, one is selected who has demonstrated
high interest in the fraternity and has used his capacities to place himself.
Following a highly successful rush season, the chapter began a program of
traditional social activities. On Saturday, Sept. 28, a dinner dance was given
in honor of the new pledges in the College Cafeteria with Bill Hollingsworth's
"Southernaires" furnishing the music. This event was followed by a hamburger
fry given by the pledges for the whole chapter.
On December 6, the chapter held its annual "Dream Girl" Banquet in the
Golden Goose Tea Room at "SCW. The highlight and conclusion of the banquet was
the presentation of the Dream Girl, Miss Virginia "older of Goodman. Miss
Holder is a Sophmore at MSCW abd Secretary of the Student Government. The
banquet was followed by the Pi Kappa Alpha Ball in the Gymnasium.
The Annual St. Valentine's Dance was carried out in traditional style in
the College Cafeteria on February 15. In keeping with St. Valentine's
tradition, the bandstand in red and white, had the Pi Kappa Alpha crest super-
imposed in the center, surrounded by blackmoor cupids. The "Cavaliers" from
the niversity of Alabama furnished the music.
On April 3, 4, and 5, the chapter gave its first post-war house party at
Leroy Percy State Park near Collandale. Spring Holidays began at State on
Thursday and upon completion of classes about fifty couples set out for Fercy
Park. Brother George incingvale's rendition of "Cap'n Dusty" was one of the
highlights in the entertainment:
