HISTORY OF Zeta Chapter
CHAPTER FOR YEARSept 19 50
TOJune 191
Zeta chapter began the school year of 1950-1951 in Septem-
ber with one of its lowest memberships since the War. only
twenty-nine actives and nine pledges comprised the member-
ship roster. Therefore it was absolutely essential that our
rushing program be successful in order that we might have a
source of new blood for the fraternity.
Rush week saw Zeta chapter united in effort and spirit to wage
one of its most extensive and successful rushing periods in
recent years. Thirty-one men were pledged to give Zeta a pledge
group that ranked more than favorably with those of other UT
fraternities, both as to quantity and quality. Through the
year Zeta initiated into the active membership twenty-five
men, while eight members of the pledge class were lost either
by transfer or to the armed services. Rushing was carried on
to a limited extent during the entire year so that at the end
of the spring quarter, Zeta had on its rolls forty-three actives
and eleven pledges. This year's pledge class, due to a limited
active membership, was compelled to assume a greater share
of responsibility than heretofore, and they conducted
themselves in such a manner that speaks well for the future
of pi Kappa Alpha on this campus.
Administration of the pledge class was in the capable hands
of Brothers Horton, Grafton, and Hamrick. Although these men
were in complete control of the pledge class, they showed
both tolerance and understanding in the exercise of their
duties. Pledges were allowed to elect their own officers
and make many of the decisions affecting them through these
officers. The pledge president's chair was filled by Bob
Davis. Charles Williams was voted the best initiate of the
year and received the "Uncle Billy" Briscoe award. Bob Hall
was selected as Zeta's best pledge during the University!s
Greek Week exercises. The new blood of Zeta portends well
for her future.
For the opening of the school year Zeta's officers were SMC
Winston, IMC Hill, THC Beardsley, SC Stricklin, and House-
managers Franklin and Frazier. For the winter and spring
quarters the officers were SMC Morast, IMC Alley, THC John-
son, SC Marsden, and Housemanagers Dise and Heim. All of the
officers have endeavored to perform their duties to the satis-
faction of everyone and with favorable results. officers
elected for the summer and fall quarters are SMC Alley, IMC
Bill Henry, THC Peters.
The Chapter reluctantly discharged our faithful Housemother,
Mrs. Tharpe , in order to cut down expenses. Our cook for many
