Pi Kappa Alpha Historical Sketch for School Year 1959-1960
Pi Kappa Alpha Historical Sketch For School Year
1959 1960
There were about 35 active members of the Fraternity at the
beginning of the school year. We initiated 25 men to give us a total
of 60 active members at the close of the school year. The percentage
of initiations in the pledge class was about 40%.
The Chapter had some trials and rough spots in its internal
organization but the Brothers are, at the close of the school year,
in relatively close harmony. The first S.M.C. of the year was not
a strong leader and, consequently, the Chapter's affairs were not
carried on with the best possible dispatch. The organization was
loose and poorly supervised - this marks a nadir in the history of
this Chapter.
Winter elections placed in office a man of considerable character
and ability. The new S.M.C. has demonstrated his ability by substan-
tially improving the internal condition of the Chapter. Offices are
now closely supervised and the new president takes a very real and
personal interest in the Fraternity. The placing of a strong leader
in office has not been without its drawbacks, however; for the S.M.C.
has gathered about him a power elite of his friends which comprises
the governing body of the Chapter. The overall effect has been an
attempted dictation over the Brothers. The reason for the election of
these friends of the president to office has been the tremendous
popularity of this S.M.C..
The administration, while it has done much to put the Chapter
on its feet has failed to deal with a serious internal issue. This
issue concerns morals. When the farewell messages of the brothers are
said the main criticism is on moral issues. Gross negligence in the
handeling of funds has caused needless waste and expense on the Chapter
members. For example, a Brother in charge of the Coke machine had
$35.00in change in his room in a beer can. The money was stolen and the
Brothers were assessed to cover the amount because he was unable
to assume fimantial responsibility. The Chapter allowed the house,
which is no longer ours, to become so run down that the landlord
threatened to evict us if repairs were not made. The condition of some
rooms approaches squalor. All of this criticism should not be taken,
however, as If sour grapes 11 or should it be held as a promise of future
events. The Chapter is on its way up. Next year should see a substantial
change in our rating if things progress as they have.
There have been attempts, by the Chapter, to enter all of the
major campus events. These attempts have been unsuccessful due largely
to poor coordination of activities and a lack of qualified direction.
We have entered: "All Sing", "Carnicus", "Homecoming", and the campus
elections.
A few members have received recognition in campus affairs. Ton
Johnson got Scarabbean, Volunteer of the Year, Homecoming Co-Chairman
and ran, but was defeated, for Senior Class President. David Litton
was elected President of the Nahheeyayli Board.
The Chapter reduced its debt from $8,000 to around $2,500 this
year, which is very good. Scholarship was average with no special
measures being used to foster better grades.
